Every spring, nature makes an effort to help the body become a better fat burner. The heavier, higher-protein and higher-fat foods harvested in the winter that help insulate and rejuvenate the body are replaced with the very austere, low-fat harvest of spring. Every spring the body slips into a fat metabolic state and the appetite decreases. To get energy without fat in the diet, the body is forced to burn its own fat each spring – don’t miss this natural opportunity to reset and detox!
When you re-connect the eating habits with the cycles of nature you become healthier with ease. Here’s how you can spring clean your diet and take advantage of nature’s new year:
Tune In, Eat light
Start listening to your body. Tune in to your hunger levels and eat less when your appetite naturally allows you. Consider eating less for both breakfast and supper. It’s ideal to eat light, easy-to-digest foods during spring and wait at least three to four hours between meals. Try eating less of or eliminating foods like dairy products, iced or cold food or drinks, and fried or oily food—especially in the morning and at dinner. If you're snacking all day as you did during the holiday season, you'll disrupt the elimination of fats and toxins or even add to your body's quota. Instead of a snack, visualize a colourful rainbow and feel those cravings disappear. If you're truly hungry, have something nourishing like a soup or a few ounces of carrot juice.
Try Herbal Healing
Herbs are miraculous assistants for detoxifying and cleansing your body. You can take ½ teaspoon or two capsules of Triphala at night or first thing in the morning. If you have mucus and irritating springtime allergies, munch on to a slice of organic turmeric first thing in the morning. Drink ginger tea with lemon juice and raw honey before meals to keep the digestive fire healthy and your elimination patterns regular.
Consider a Fast
A fast is an excellent way to let go of the old built up toxin, mucus, fats and acids stored in the body. If comfortable, consider a fast where you drink only water for a day or just blended vegetables for a day. You can also consider eating nothing after noon for one day a week.
Not just diet, our bodies need a bit of extra movement around this time of the year. Yoga and power walking is a great way to give your metabolism a boost. If you already have an exercise regime, spring is the time to push yourself to do a few more extra squats or walk a mile more than usual. As you increase your exercise, you will find that your body releases tension and that stretching comes easier. To keep the momentum of detoxification going, it's important to be consistent this time of year. Showing up regularly on your mat ensures your body will get what it needs for a gentle, gradual reduction of excess toxins, and your mind will wake up from the fog of wintertime habits.
Drink in the beauty of Nature
Not just what we eat or drink, what we ingest into our bodies through our senses are also important. Spring is the time when nature is abundant with colours. Go out, take a walk, breathe in the beauty of flowers adorning the trees on the city streets, watch the sun light a fire on the sky when it sets, notice the delicate green of new born leaves and while you do so, allow the new in you to blossom. Sit quietly if you can in nature and make a conscious intent to let go of all the thoughts, ideas, beliefs and habits that doesn’t serve you. Allow that which nourishes your deepest being.
We wish you a Happy Spring.
